River Reports and Flows

The Smith River height is 8.42 feet and the flow is 3,120 CFS.

The Chetco height is 3.48 feet and the flow is 1,380 CFS low with a little color.

The weather changed to rain in the last two days my gauge had 2 1/4 inches of rain.

There was not a lot of change to the rivers the Elk was low and clear and the Sixes was brown and clearing the fishing here was not real good.

I have reports that the Smith fished very well with most boats getting 4 to 8 fish each.

I will fish steelhead there tomorrow.

The rain that is predicted won't be much for the week.

I have openings for next week if you want to fish please call.

I will report back in a few days.

Look forward to seeing you all soon!

River Reports and Flows

The rains stopped for now last night.

The rivers are dropping like a ( Rock ).

The Smith River height is16.04 feet and the flow are 23,100 CFS and still high.

The Chetco height is 12.89 feet and the flow is 19,800 CFS and still high.

The rivers will need a couple of days without rain to fish again, the Smith might fish tomorrow, the Chetco will not.

Happy Holidays!!

I wanted to remind you all that Steelhead season is upon us!

We caught our first steelhead on November 23 while Salmon fishing on the Smith River.

She was a beauty.

She wasn't nearly the Smith River record of 27 lbs., but all 11 native pounds of her got my blood pumping'.

It should be a great season.

We had a very productive season last year and data shows that this year should be even better.

The success of commercial and sport fisherman off-shore should bring fruitful runs into our coastal river systems.

I can schedule guided trips on the Chetco, Smith and Sixes Rivers...what ever you prefer.

Typical techniques include side drifting roe or pulling plugs, but it may prove to be a very productive fly-fishing season as well.

The steelhead season will continue through the end of April.

I appreciate your loyalty fishing with me over the years, and I hope to see you this year as well.

Put a trip on your calendar and give me a call to hold the date.

Look forward to seeing you all soon!!

Spring Salmon Reports and River Flows

Fishing for spring Chinook salmon remains very slow from Agness downstream to the ocean, despite the fact that this is the peak time for spring Chinook entering the Rogue.

Spring Chinook salmon fishing should improve as the upper Rogue received rain this week adding some depth and color to the river.

And it couldn't have come at a better time because anglers in Gold Beach are waiting for the good springer fishing to occur as forecast earlier this year.

Gold Ray Dam fish counts updated Monday by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife show the migration is on. Though the run-to-date total was sparse 4,115 adults, 722 of those migrated into the upper Rogue that day alone.

But getting them to bite has been the problem. Catches remain light in the lower Rogue, where low and clear water has left spring Chinook skittish.

A few have been caught by boat and bank anglers daily, but the water is generally too warm for a good spring Chinook bite in Gold Beach.

The springers will keep coming into mid July.

The Rogue River Level is 5.04 and the flow is 5,730 cfs.

Spring Salmon Reports and River Flows

Spring Chinook salmon are starting to run up-river en masse.

But it hasn't come to lower Rogue anglers who are watching hundreds of salmon swim past them in the clear water that has the salmon a bit spooked and unwilling to bite.

With Lost Creek Lake now full, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is passing in-flow.

On Wednesday, that meant more than 3,100 cubic feet per second of water, and that good flow.

Drawing the salmon out of the ocean and right upstream without stopping at lower Rogue hot- Spots like Elephant Rock.

Rogue River springer fishing has been very good right after the rains stopped: Wednesday was the best day on the river this week.

The springers will keep coming for the next several weeks into mid June.

The reports were several fish per boat and up to 6 by a few.

I did land 3 very nice king salmon with the small fish going 24 # 's the next going 27#'s and we got a button fish that was a 33 # ER.

The term a button fish is a fish of thirty pounds gets a copper button, a fish of 40 pounds gets a silver button, and a fish over fifty pounds gets a gold button, these are given out by the resorts on the Rogue River.

The fishermen of the Rogue River display them on there favorite hats, with pride of there accomplishments of fishing the Rogue River.

The rains over the last couple of days have raised the river as of Monday the height and flow was at 4.00 foot and the flow 3,800 and today 6.28 ft and 8,590 cfs.

The Smith raised about 1 foot an hour from 1 PM to 4 PM and came up a total 6 feet in about 4 hours.

This will bring a fresh batch of steelhead and will start fish a day after the rains stop it drops and clears fast.

The Smith is been tuff for most with a few nice fish hooked up by the guides who know how to fish low water.

The Chetco is fishing but it to is tuff with low water.

We were able to hook 3 steelhead on Thursday and landed 2 and that was after practicing casting for half of the day.

The trip on Friday I had a single and we got bite several times hooked up 3 steelhead and landed 3 steelhead to 10 pounds.

The last steelhead hooked went off it charged up river on the first burst 40 yards clearing the water by 3 feet.

Charged toward the other side of the river and clearing the water again turned and went down river with us in fast water that was landed after a tug of war and some time it was a mint bright.

The Smith River flow is 4,060 cfs and its height is 9.19ft clear and dropping slow.

The Chetco River flow is 2,240 cfs and its height is 4.36 ft it is green above Loeb and brown below.

The Elk River is 3.9 ft it is green and getting too low .

The low water makes you change the way you fish, but fishing in low water can be better then you might think.

There has been time during steelhead season the Smith gets very low and the steelhead are there to catch it can drop and that will be ok.

We fished the Chetco this weekend there is always more boats, then during mid week.

The weather was nice sunny and warm with the temp go up to the mid 60's it looked like springtime.

We landed some nice bright steelhead up to 12 pounds I had a good trip with a single thanks Brad.

The Chetco changed right in front of are eyes from a nice green to brown.

The location is about 1 mile down river from Loeb Park at pepperwood down below the willow run.

What is happing is the river turned sharp towards the bank and is under cutting it, there is several trees in the river now how about 8 to 10 trees with the dirt washing out turning the water brown.

Current Report:
Steelhead Reports and River flows

The Smith River flow is 5,870 cfs and its height is 10.30 and is fishing good.

The Chetco River flow is 3,550 cfs and its height is 5.58 and is perfect.

The Elk River is 5.0A ft.

With the cold weather the light rains and the snow level about 2,000 feet, the rivers are dropping nice and slow making then very fishable.

Having fished on the two sister rivers the Smith and the Chetco, I noticed that from the big water a few weeks again, there have been changes in some of the slots with gravel deposits.

There is a lot of fresh steelhead moving in to the rivers and as they drop the steelhead group up in the slots and hold until pressure move them else were.

There is a lot of boat traffic on the river it is better to be a copy cat then it is to think that it is greener on the other side

I have not scored on any really big steelhead as of yet but a 12 pound fish makes the hart pound harder o' what a thrill.

The Steelhead season is here I am taking bookings.

There are openings on my calendar in Jan., Feb. and March for steelhead.
